Meet Leigh: The South African Petite Model Redefining Fashion

Meet Leigh: The South African Petite Model Redefining Fashion

In fashion, change often comes from those brave enough to challenge tradition. For our upcoming Summer ’26 collection, House of Arti set out on a search to find a fresh face who could embody both elegance and strength — and that’s when Leigh stepped into the spotlight.

At just 21, Leigh (1.59m/ 5f'2.6") is already carving her place in the modelling world as a petite model determined to redefine beauty standards. Crowned the winner of the House of Arti Petite Model Search, she represents the new wave of inclusivity that fashion so desperately needs. Between her studies at the University of Pretoria and her growing modelling career, Leigh sat down with us to share her inspiring story — one of resilience, passion, and breaking boundaries.

Tell us about yourself. My name is Leigh, I’m 21 years old, and I’m from Pretoria. I’m currently in my final year at the University of Pretoria, studying a double major in Information Science and Business Management.

At what age did you start modelling? I started modelling when I was in Grade 10, so I was 16.

What made you want to become a petite model and sign up for an agency? Modelling was never something I planned or imagined for myself. Growing up, I struggled a lot with self-confidence and body image. In early 2020, these challenges intensified, and I developed eating problems that made it hard for me to even leave the house. With support, I took part in a photoshoot to help rebuild my confidence. After seeing the photos, my mom encouraged me to pursue modelling as a way to continue growing my self-esteem. I applied to agencies in South Africa, and since then, modelling has become a positive and important part of my life.

What is it like being a petite model in South Africa? Being a petite model here comes with both rewards and challenges. The industry is gradually becoming more inclusive, but there’s still a strong preference for taller models. I’ve had to work hard to be recognised and given opportunities, showing that talent and professionalism are what truly matter. Thankfully, I’ve also experienced open-mindedness from some brands and agencies, which has created some wonderful opportunities.

What are the challenges you face as a petite model in the fashion industry? One practical challenge is that most sample clothing is designed for taller models, which can make fittings difficult. Additionally, petite models are sometimes overlooked for castings purely based on height, regardless of ability or attitude. It’s an ongoing challenge to demonstrate that there is room for all kinds of models in the industry. Despite this, I’m proud to be part of a shift towards greater inclusion.

What change would you love to see within the fashion industry? I’d like to see the industry embrace diversity in every aspect, including height. It’s important that fashion reflects the wide range of people it serves. More representation of petite models in campaigns and shows would help others feel included and valued. I also hope designers start considering the needs of petite women when creating their collections.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to be a petite model? Don’t let your height hold you back. The industry is evolving, and there’s space for all kinds of beauty and talent. Focus on developing your skills, building a strong portfolio, and staying authentic. Rejection is part of the process, but persistence and confidence in yourself will take you far.

What is your dream as a petite model? I would love to be featured in a major magazine like Vogue, not just for recognition, but to show that there is space for models of all heights in high fashion. I want to help open doors for others and encourage people to believe in their potential regardless of traditional standards.

Leigh isn’t just a model; she’s a movement. Her story reflects the courage of a new generation of petite women who are unafraid to take up space in fashion, no matter the limitations imposed by traditional standards. As the face of House of Arti’s Summer ’26 collection, Leigh is more than our muse — she is proof that elegance, resilience, and ambition know no height.
